Elidel (pimecrolimus) is prescribed for the treatment of mild to moderate atopic dermatitis in adults and children. It works by inhibiting calcineurin, which reduces inflammation, redness, and itching without the skin-thinning effects associated with long-term topical steroids.
Apply a thin layer of Elidel cream to the affected skin areas twice daily, usually in the morning and evening, or as directed by your healthcare provider. Wash your hands before and after application. Avoid covering treated areas with bandages unless instructed.
Inform your doctor if you have a history of skin cancer, infections, or immune system disorders. Limit sun exposure while using Elidel, and use sunscreen or protective clothing, as the medication can increase the risk of skin sensitivity. Avoid applying to broken or infected skin.
Do not use Elidel if allergic to pimecrolimus or any of the cream components. It should not be used in patients with active skin infections unless under medical supervision.
Common side effects include mild burning, itching, redness, or irritation at the application site. Rare but serious effects may include skin infections or allergic reactions. Seek medical attention if severe symptoms occur.
Elidel is a topical medication with minimal systemic absorption, so interactions are rare. Inform your doctor of any other topical or systemic medications you are using on the affected skin areas.
If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as you remember and continue with the regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Overdose is unlikely due to limited systemic absorption but may cause increased local irritation. Seek medical advice if excessive amounts are applied.
Store Elidel cream at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep the tube tightly closed and out of reach of children.
