Ilaxten (tiotropium bromide) is prescribed for the long-term maintenance treatment of COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, and sometimes for asthma in adults. It works as a long-acting anticholinergic (bronchodilator) that relaxes the muscles around the airways, helping to open the air passages and improve airflow.
Ilaxten is administered via inhalation using a handihaler or inhaler device. Typically, it is taken once daily at the same time each day. Follow the inhaler instructions carefully and rinse your mouth after each use to reduce the risk of throat irritation.
Inform your doctor if you have glaucoma, urinary retention, bladder obstruction, heart problems, or kidney/liver issues. Monitor for signs of difficulty urinating, eye pain, rapid heartbeat, or worsening breathing. Do not use as a rescue inhaler for sudden breathing problems.
Do not use Ilaxten if allergic to tiotropium, atropine, or related compounds. Avoid use in patients with severe hypersensitivity to similar anticholinergic drugs.
Common side effects include dry mouth, cough, throat irritation, and constipation. Serious side effects may include rapid heartbeat, urinary retention, glaucoma exacerbation, or allergic reactions. Seek medical attention if serious symptoms occur.
Ilaxten may interact with other anticholinergic drugs or medications affecting heart rate. Inform your doctor about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and supplements you are taking.
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not take two doses at once.
Overdose may cause severe dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, or urinary retention. Seek immediate medical attention if overdose is suspected.
Store Ilaxten at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep the inhaler and capsules (if applicable) in the original packaging and out of reach of children.
