Isentress (raltegravir) is prescribed for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretroviral medications. It works as an integrase inhibitor, blocking the enzyme HIV integrase, which is necessary for viral replication, helping to control the infection and maintain immune function.
Isentress is taken orally, usually twice daily, with or without food. Tablets or chewable formulations should be swallowed whole (or chewed if appropriate). The dosage may vary depending on other antiretroviral medications, kidney function, and patient response. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully.
Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, a history of muscle disorders, or any allergies. Monitor for signs of muscle pain, weakness, or dark urine. Do not stop taking Isentress without consulting your healthcare provider, as this can lead to viral resistance.
Do not use Isentress if allergic to raltegravir or any component of the tablet. Caution is advised in patients with severe liver disease or concurrent medications that may interact.
Common side effects include headache, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, and insomnia. Serious side effects may include severe allergic reactions, liver problems, or muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis). Seek medical attention if serious symptoms occur.
Isentress may interact with certain antacids, rifampin, anticonvulsants, or other medications affecting liver enzymes. Inform your healthcare provider about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and supplements you are taking.
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose.
Overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, or other side effects. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
Store Isentress at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep tablets in the original container and out of reach of children.
